A fourth sensor alongside the standard iPhone 12 fare in the form of a LiDAR scanner makes it easier for the iPhone to work out what it's looking at, and we found it did a great job of detecting faces in low light situations. So why is it so low in our list of the top iPhones? For top specs in a smaller size, pick a Pro, and if you want to save some money then get a standard model or a mini. The camera is good on this phone, but won't compete with the very top iPhones, and we found it has an average battery life too. You may not enjoy the battery life as that isn't fantastic on the iPhone 12 mini, but if that's your main focus you'll like some of the other phones on this list. You may even find that apps from established companies, ranging from banks to airlines, are a bit smoother and cleaner on iOS than Android, with better integration with the phone's core services, like Wallet. You can even complete purchases on your Mac by using biometric authentication features on your iPhone via Apple Pay.
One of our staff members, Henry T. Casey, loves using Bear (opens in new tab) to compose blog posts on his Mac and iPhone, but we've struggled to find a note-taking app on Android as comprehensive and slick. One of our favorite Twitter apps, Tweetbot 5 (opens in new tab), is an iOS exclusive, for example; by contrast, one of the best third-party Twitter apps we've encountered on Android, Fenix 2, strongly pales in comparison. The front features the aging 1344 x 750 pixel Liquid Retina Display, which looks great on its own, but literally pales in comparison to, for instance, the iPhone 13 mini's 5.4-inch edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR display OLED screen. More expensive than the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 makes up for that price hike with a wealth of features that should prove useful in the coming months and years. Many of their features overlap, but design-wise they look quite different, aside from the basic touchscreen-focused layout. Smartphones look like bulky cell phones with a small keyboard and a large screen. Only a handful of Android phone makers have hardware ecosystems that approach Apple's, and even for some that come close, like Samsung, you won't get the depth of integration possible between the iPhone and other Apple-built devices. This might seem like a shallow reason, but Apple obviously makes a wide breadth of tech products, and if you already own a Mac, iPad or Apple Watch, getting an iPhone makes a lot of sense. There are a number of tiny spec differences between this and the standard iPhone 12 - for example, wireless charging is notably slower on the iPhone 12 mini - but otherwise you're getting high-end specs such as the powerful rear camera, 5G support and MagSafe support as well. Apple possesses the Pro Max for up to 20 hours of battery life with video playback, compared to 17 hours for the Pro and 15 hours for the mini.
With the iPhone 12 mini, Apple introduced an iPhone mini for the first time in its history of making handsets, and it's almost exactly the same as the iPhone 12 but it's smaller, making it one of the best compact iPhones. Apple claims 15 hours of video playback (not streaming), and we can believe that, too. In a test using the same parameters, the iPhone 12 lasted for eight hours and 25 minutes, while the iPhone 12 Pro lasted for nine hours and six minutes when connected to 5G. When connected to LTE, the iPhone 12 lasted for 1- hours and 23 minutes, while the iPhone 12 Pro lasted for 11 hours and 24 minutes. Another one of our favorites is Continuity Camera, which allows you to take pictures and scan documents using your iPhone's camera, and then view and edit them on your Mac. All iPhones are powerful, and Apple supports them for a long time, so age and chipset needn't be a big deal, but if you don't want to upgrade for a long time then a newer model with a faster chipset is ideal. Elsewhere, it's business as usual for the iPhone 12 Pro offering much of what the iPhone 12 already has for less, but if you want that extra oomph, it's an impressive upgrade.
